YAK

The yak is a species of long-haired cattle found throughout Central Asia. They are sturdy, heavily built animals, well adapted to high altitudes and low temperatures. In the Tibet-region yaks are used as beasts of burden. When farmers travel through steep mountain slopes to find new pastures for their cattle, the yaks carry equipment and household. Although the yak is a formidable animal, it can get frightened. When it senses danger, such as a change in the weather, it may turn around and cause all other yaks to stampede downhill. On narrow paths the outcome can be fatal.

The dynamic relation between the farmers and the yaks has inspired the creation of this work of music. As well as the traditional music of Tibet and Central Asia.

WitchHunt

The witch trials that occurred between 1450-1750 resulted in an estimated 35,000 to 100,000 executions. Those accused of witchcraft were primarily from the lower economic class, holding underprivileged positions. To dispose of anyone deemed “unwanted,” lies and rumors would be distributed to turn the opinion against a particular person. Since it was nearly impossible for the accused to prove their innocence, many perished during these unfair trials, most of whom were women.

WitchHunt dramatizes these events through symbolism and story telling.

GRACHT

The Dutch canal system, renowned for its charm, has historically served as an ingenious means of transportation and defense. Their interconnected network facilitated the movement of goods and people, propelling the Netherlands into economic prominence during the Golden Age. Additionally, the strategic positioning of these waterways offered formidable protection against invaders, contributing to the nation’s security and sovereignty.

In recent years, these achievements seem all but forgotten, with the canals serving primarily as garbage disposal. “GRACHT” is written to commemorate the degradation of this national heritage.
